EO4SDG Annual Meeting 2019

The GEO EO4SDG Initiative will hold its third Annual Meeting on the margins of the Ninth Session of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM9) on August 5, 2019 at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Background 

This annual event will provide an opportunity for EO4SDG contributors to meet together and share progress, celebrate accomplishments, and assess the initiative’s current status and planning for the future. Attendees will reflect on major activities and lessons learned during 2018-2019, review key items from the updated 2020-2024 EO4SDG Strategic Implementation Plan, and address how EO4SDG can amplify its work with other GEO Work Programme Elements, and with stakeholders across multiple sectors and regions. We welcome all memberes of EO4SDG to attend the meeting in person or remotely.

Objectives

The 2019 EO4SDG Annual Event will focus primarily on the following items:

    • Celebrate and reflect on accomplishments
    • Highlight lessons learned including success factors, challenges, potential risks, implications, and opportunities for the future
    • Review key items from the 2020-2024 EO4SDG Strategic Implementation Plan and identify next steps and tasks for the upcoming 12-18 months
    • Review EO4SDG’s federated approach to GEO’s overall service to the SDG: highlight examples that have delivered value, understand gaps and needs, and garner ideas for how to maximize GEO’s service to the SDG
    • Review current stakeholder engagement, identify gaps, and develop suggestions for strengthening partnerships with organizations in support of Earth observation integration in national development plans and statistical accounts
    • In an open session, engage with the UNGGIM community and discuss how Earth observations can and are already supporting official statistics for the SDG, particularly to promote more effective and timely policy responses.
Decisions & Actions
  • Agreement on key successes of EO4SDG Initiative (especially from initial implementation plan)
  • Increased confidence about the effectiveness of EO4SDG Initiative and reinforce the implementation plan
  • Agreement on lessons learned (including success factors, existing gaps & items we need to do better, risks & opportunities)
  • Agreement on desired functions for a SDG-focused expert at the GEO Secretariat.  (Deliver this as recommendations to the GEO Secretariat. )
  • A process to coordinate across ongoing and new GEO Work Program Elements. Identify people to lead this coordination.
  • Agreement on guidelines to package good practice examples of methods for measuring and reporting on SDG indicators tailored to NSOs/ line ministries / NMAs.
  • Specific people to lead this packaging for specific indicators, particularly with thematic GEO Work Programme elements and relevant GEO Member Countries
  • Agreement on key items and associated leads to deliver these items by: 1) GEO Plenary; 2) during 2019-2020.

 

Who Should Attend?
  • Work Sessions (Closed): All EO4SDG members and members of GEO Flagships/ Initiatives/ Community Activities working on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • Open Session: All EO4SDG members and the broader EO4SDG community including representatives from UN member countries, custodian agencies, international organizations and initiatives with a role in advancing the SDGs.

Monday, 5 August from 8:30am to 10:00am

Entrance to the UN Headquarters will be at the “Visitors Entrance” located on 1st Avenue between East 45th and 46th Streets. Please pick up your ground pass at the Visitor’s Entrance from a UN Statistics Division staff member during the following schedule. Please note that there will be no collection of grounds pass on behalf of someone else. Additionally, please bring your passport as proof of identification. 

In the event that you cannot make it to the above schedule, please contact Ms. Li Wang,
(wangl@un.org or tel, no. + 212-963-9547 ) by Friday, 2 August to arrange for alternative means
for pick up. Events passes are necessary to enter and leave UN buildings.
Remote connectivity will also be feasible for the entire meeting. Connecting details will be sent
separately.
